Fine Wood and Parts

Wood

Wood is available in many different grades listed from A to AAAAAA or 1A and 6A to avoid confusion. The higher the figure, the higher the value. The problem with highly figured wood, of course, is the inherent faults in the wood such as interior voids and cracks. We can observe a blank for the outside only and what fault is found in nature on the inside, is considered an act of god. Still, these problems can be resolved in stocking as voids and imperfections can be filled.

There is also the Joseph Brazier MMC6 process in which the wood is impregnated and stabilized. This allows for greater security in cutting the wood by machine, and prevents warping, cracking and splitting that does occur over time in highly figured wood.

Today the largest supply of wood comes from the USA from tree grafts made many years ago in California. Claro, English variations, French, Bastone and others are derived from those trees. Wood from England and France today is about gone. Turkish, called Circassian, is fading fast as trees are chased up mountain sides where freezing temperatures in winter often split the interior giving fewer viable specimens to choose from - hence, the higher price. We have wood for many uses such as tables, lamps, bow handles, knife and pistol grips, boxes to name just a few. Wood is sold in individual pieces to flats and planks.
