Hunting in Mexico

Ahhhh, hunting in Mexico; down at Ernesto Zaragoza’s, the Armida Hotel in Guymas along the coast with its fine steaks and a cool beer after a hard day of hunting……..

Yes, I remember those days and many like them over the last 20 years hunting with Ernesto Zaragoza’s “Solimar Hunting Safari’s”.

Mule Deer

There are BIG Mule Deer in Sonora on Ernesto’s ranch!

The Mule Deer are big down in Sonora for sure, and nothing like the hunting on Ernesto Zaragoza’s ranch! For those Mule deer hunts you fly or dive further inland and stay in his comfortable quarters while hunting with a native tracker. While there take in the great vista’s of this unpopulated expanse; the Bobcat, Coyote, Desert Sheep, native Quail and Doves abound…. Personally I like to hunt the Quail when out here as the coveys are large and mostly un-hunted. I would walk ten miles to eat a Quail as Ernesto knows. Nothing like hunting out there; nothing…

Most out here come for the big record Mule Deer and another funny animal running around called Desert Big Horn Sheep.

Big Horn Sheep
One of the most elusive animals to hunt is the Desert Big Horn Sheep. Ernesto Zaragoza poses here with one taken by him.

To have a “Grand Slam” of sheep you must have the Desert Big Horn. To have a trophy, as related to me recently by Major Jim Bisio of Heritage Walnut Stocks, is a troubling endeavor. One may hunt for years to even see a quality animal to harvest. You can die in the heat, get snake bite, burned to a crisp in the sun and come up empty. But in Sonora with Solimar Hunting Safari’s your chances are increased with the quality of their guides and the vast area of un-hunted lands available to the hunter.

Many come for the Dove hunting as I do. I love to hunt Dove and hunting in the Guymas area is nearly always good. And it is easy to get to from Tucson or Phoenix with straight flights in there most every day. I can just jump a plane and be down there this afternoon; shoot a couple of days and be back rested and ready for work. Remembering Argentina and Cost Rica; those were long long trips, not like a jump down to Mexico.

Karl Doves Guymas
Having a good day of hunting means enjoying the day and being out of doors shooting our favorite guns. Karl Lippard pictured here, tested and developed Perazzi shotgun selective triggers, choke tubes, and lubricants used today at “Solimar Safari’s” while Vice President and General Manager of Perazzi.

And what about the Duck hunting? Well many make a combination of Duck and Dove hunting; and hunt both. Hunt the Ducks early in the morning and catch the Doves on the wing to feed in the fields. Settle back for a nice lunch, maybe a nap at mid-day in the shade of a tree and back on the birds in the afternoon while dropping Ducks on the water even that evening! Wow, that will get you going.

Hunting with Ernesto and “Solimar Safari’s” is Karl Lippard far right with friends.

Karl Lippard (called affectionately Dr. Muerto) holds the record for number of birds killed with the highest average of doves to shells expended in Sonora since records began in the late 1800’s. With Karl from top left is Randy LaFair a restaurateur, Rick Brain world famous photographer “Rick Brian Shoots” from LA, Greg Malone bottom left our nations largest “John Deer” Dealer and David McLemore of the “Jitney Jungle Food Store” chain of Louisiana. Great friends and fine hunters these gentlemen make hunting enjoyable and the experience such as this, life long memories.

So safe hunting is available to you in Mexico hunting with “Solimar Safari’s.” When you want some class hunting, fine food and a comfortable place to stay, come to Guymas; enjoy as I do the hospitality of my friend and world renowned hunter himself, Ernesto Zaragoza. Give him a call at 011-52-6222220644 and schedule your trip down. Look for me at the hotel too talking to Ernesto about the days hunt, having a fine beverage while relaxing before dinner.

Hope to see you there!
